In 1980 Gordon Giffin called his wife from a payphone and informed her that he was quitting his job and starting his own millwork business in their garage. Working out of his garage was short-lived after a delivery truck took out the power lines to the Giffin residence and the surrounding neighbors. Soon after, Giffin Interior and Fixture moved to a 4,000 square foot facility at the current location on Scotti Drive in Pittsburgh.
Did you know that Jeff Bezos quit his job at a Seattle, Washington investment bank in 1994 to open a virtual bookstore?
Jeff Bezos, with a few employees, developed software for his virtual bookstore out of his garage that became known as Amazon.
Through the years, Gordon Giffin grew the company by establishing relationships with customers and investing in the company. Acquiring tools and equipment to handle larger projects along with training for the employees to run the equipment was one of the investments. Gordon was able to purchase properties around the original location and grew the shop to an 85k square foot facility. He continued to make Giffin Interior a great place to work by hosting employee parties and recognizing employees for their efforts. Giffin Interior is not just a place to earn a paycheck. Giffin Interior is an institution that supports family values and personal growth.
In the Harvard Business Review article HOW GREAT COMPANIES THINK DIFFERENTLY, Rosabeth Moss Kanter wrote
“Great companies identify something larger than transactions to provide purpose and meaning”.
Approximately 14 years ago Gordon Giffin was succeeded by his son Dustin Giffin. Dustin has continued to improve Giffin Interior by investing in new millwork technologies, continued training, continuous process review and recognition for excellence. In recent years, Giffin Interior has purchased new automated CNC and sorting machines as well as investing in the Innergy Millwork ERP software suite. Last year, Dustin Giffin was the chairperson for the Architectural Woodworking Institute (AWI) and Giffin Interior is AWI QCP licensed.
Did you know that AWI was founded in 1953 and has published the standards for woodworking since 1961?
This year Giffin Interior is pushing toward the future. We have changed our company logo and will be publishing a new website. While we are upgrading tools, processes, and our brand, two things will always remain the same. Excellence in the products we provide and outstanding customer service.
